About Capital Area Runners
Capital Area Runners is a DC metropolitan area club that was founded to provide group training opportunities for highly motivated and competitive minded runners of all ability levels. We meet for organized workouts 4 days per week with the Saturday and Sunday sessions open to all comers, and the Tuesday and Friday sessions open to registrants in the CAR Distance Training Program. We have a current membership of 120+ runners, most of whom are training for distances ranging from 5k through the marathon.
Annual membership in Capital Area Runners is available for $50. This general membership covers participation in the Saturday and Sunday morning group runs (7:00 AM from May thru October; 8:00 AM from November thru April), receipt of the weekly CAR e-newsletter containing information on upcoming workouts, race results, and training tips, and participation in CAR social events which take place throughout the year. The general membership workouts are open to all runners regardless of CAR membership, but we ask that all regular attendees become CAR members to help defray the costs of items such as group insurance and refreshments that are provided at aid stations that we set up during many of the weekend runs. CAR Distance Training Program
The Distance Training Program is directed by CAR founder and head coach George Buckheit. In addition to the workouts that are available to the general membership, Training Program members meet an additional 2 days per week with workout options on Tuesdays at 6:30 AM and Fridays at 6:30 AM. These workouts usually take place at the Washington-Liberty High School track in Arlington. There is a program fee to participate in the Distance Training Program that can be paid in 1 month ($65), 2 month ($120), 3 month ($170) or 6 month ($300) increments. Participants have unlimited e-mail and phone access to Coach Buckheit, as well as opportunities to meet with him before and after every training session. He will develop personalized training programs leading up to specific events and/or goal races. Click here to register online.
Elite Development Program
In partnership with our primary sponsor Road Runner Sports, CAR can offer training and racing assistance to emerging athletes through our Elite Development Program. To qualify for the program, athletes must meet at least one of the following standards:
Men: 5k – 15:30; 10k – 32:00; 10 miles – 53:30; ½ marathon – 1:11:00; marathon – 2:30:00
Women: 5k – 17:40; 10k – 36:40; 10 miles – 1:01:30; ½ marathon – 1:21:30; marathon – 2:52:00
